Gray and Yellow

A current color trend in home decor and card making is soft shades of gray and a pastel.  They are very soothing and fun to work with.  On my Christian Card Makers group I did a color set of Grays and Yellows for everyone to work with this week , I'm bring a little of that here for you to enjoy and use in your card making.

I like to use digital papers and I like to use what I have, for these two cards I did both.

My image was a soft Asian painting of a yellow bird

I love this image however it could end up being a very dull focal point for a card



I lightened up a bit 



and then a bit more:

I kept the warm gray undertones


I selected a verse.

I changed the sizing to fit the image





Next I worked up  digital paper layering

I didn't like it - too Blah.

 I printed my papers separately and began to build the card.

This is the first card with printed papers




This was so hard to photo, the bird image is printed on glossy and color enhanced with alcohol marker.

The second card I printed on laid paper and used a bit of paper that came as Birthday DAKS:



I think the most difficult thing about this card making was keeping the contrast levels balanced.  I tend to like very strong contrasts.  There is no right or wrong, we all have our personal preference.  I think when I started taking card making classes the cards the instructors were making had almost zero contrast, and I just couldn't get comfortable with those cards. We all respond to color and images in a  different ways, the important thing is to find what you love doing and then do it!!

Tutorial: Making Napkin Cards

Here is a fun tried and true old fashioned card making technique. Long before we had all these sumptuous patterned papers we had gorgeous napkins! For depth of color and interesting texture, you can't beat them especially for the money! Most you you may have done these so this will be an ‘Oh Yeah’ moment! Have fun! You can start with any size paper napkin - I like to pick min up at Tuesday Morning, they have a wonderful selection and are usually marked down Separate the printed surface from the tissue backing - these napkins are usually 3 layers I cut my panels to fit a light weight piece of cardstock I drizzled glue on the card stock and then added my napkin panel I found it was easier to keep the light and floaty napkin on the table and then place the gluey paper on it Gently smoothed it a little bit - remember the napkin layer is very fragile I gave it a few minutes to set up and the just added a puddle of Lineco glue. How To Restore A Vintage Rubber Stamp

I have a lovely Vintage  Magenta Cat Stamp, I'm not sure of the exact year of release, but I'm pretty sure it is about 20 years old, It appears to be in perfect condition.   But on inspection, I can feel that the rubber has gotten a little dry and "tough" and what that means is that I won't get a good impression from it.  I bet you have run into the same thing with some of your older stamps!  Don't toss the stamp, there is a way to restore them pretty easily! I have on hand the little sanding blocks you can buy for about $2.00 at the hardware store.  The are very handy in the craft room!  I gave this stamp a vigorous rubbing and then wiped off the dust with a damp wipe Next a coat of glycerin - a $4.00 drugstore item - you can also re-ink your embossing/resist pad with this! Let it sit over night and then wipe with a damp towel.  Your stamp should have that nice soft rubber texture.  Now the ink will sit on the rubber!  I inked up
