Heart Healthy breakfast or snack.

Oats are a wonderful grain, they fill you up, take a long time to digest ,  I buy my oats in bulk at Amazon, my preferred brand is Bobs' Red mill,  I pay 10 cents an ounce.

I bake with these oats and I grind them for use in bread and as a partial  flour substitute.
two of my favorites are homemade fruit and nut cookies and  homemade Muesli ( fruit and nut hot cereal)

you can purchase A Name Brand oat kind but beware: the second ingredient in this packet is SUGAR!  11 grams per packet : One teaspoon of granulated sugar equals 4 grams of sugar. so this itty bitty packet contains 1/3 table sugar!  This makes something healthy very unhealthy and just forget it if you have diabetes.

These ten packets run around $3.75 = 37 cents a serving

Here is how I make my Rasin, Date and Walnut Cereal. By the way my cereal has no added sugar and the cost is about 20 cents a serving.  One serving is enough for a breakfast or a snack.

this is my recipie

I empty 2lbs of oats in my mixer bowl (of course you can do this by hand as I did for years but having the mixer do the mixing leaves my hand free for something else!!

I add
1 cup raw pumpkin seeds

1 cup walnuts
you can also use almonds- if I use almonds I chop them up first in my vita-mix.
Any blender can do this.

1 cup date crumbles , 1 cup raisins

I add a healthy dose of cinnamon and powdered ginger

Using the dough hook I turn my mixer on low and let it twirl a few minutes

I use a large plastic tight sealing storage container and then make single servings for Steve to take to the office.
I make mine 1/3 cup cereal, 1/2 cup water and microwave for 1 minute.  I also love dried cranberries in mine , I just didn't have any in the house.  you can add a drizzel of maple syrup if you would like it sweeter or splash of milk.

You might think this was a lot of work, but honestly the whole thing took 10 minutes and we will enjoy this batch for a couple of months!

I've  added the links as a convenience for you so that you will have an idea of the cost and have a good resource for purchasing.  I try to get the best prices.  I have found Costco and Amazon are easy to access and prices are good.   Every area is different, the idea is do your homework for pricing.

I hope you give this a try, it is so healthy and so easy!
Thanks for stopping by,
Ginny M

I love oats to start the day, but I make it into a Bircher style muesli the evening before I want it.
